Summit Therapeutics jumps nearly 20% after AstraZeneca commits $2 billion to a cancer-drug

    Watch on YouTube

    Summary

Summit Therapeutics pared an early gain of roughly 20% to about 6% as the hosts discussed analyst price-target increases and a reported $2 billion AstraZeneca convertible-preferred investment. They suggested watching for further weakness and unusual options activity rather than chasing the rally, while acknowledging uncertainty about the financing terms.

    • Summit retreated from above $18 to roughly $16–$16.50 during the discussion.
    • Jefferies maintained a buy rating and raised its price target from $25 to $30.
    • Citi raised its price target from $40 to $43.
    • The hosts described AstraZeneca's investment as $2 billion in convertible preferred securities with a conversion level around $18.36.
    • They attributed the pullback to possible profit-taking and concerns about potential share issuance.
    • Pete suggested considering a position only if further weakness and unusual options activity created an attractive setup.
    • John emphasized that conversion might occur later and said he did not know the specific terms.

    1. Now, Summit Therapeutics, Pete, it had a double-digit gain early on from a Jeffre um price target being raised. Um, Summit Therapeutics, Pete and I've covered this one a lot. It was up over 20%. Well, it's now up about 6%. Um, the news is

    2. still good, but people are just profit taking, I'd say, Pete, um, because, uh, the buy rating was maintained. the price target went from 25 to 30. Good news there. Um but uh this uh Astroenica

    3. announcing a $2 billion investment in convertible preferred at 18 that might have a little something to do with this Pete because Summit uh was above 18 briefly and as soon as they announced that they were going to get a whole

    4. bunch of shares at around that level, the stock broke like a fever from 18 back down to 16. Like that. Yeah, it it is an amazing flip, John. I mean, I'm looking at it right now. I see it down about six or excuse me, up about 6%, but like to your point, it was up 19% plus.

    5. So, big move. You've obviously got a lot of money involved here when you're talking about Astroenica and the investment of $2 billion into this, John, at like you said, somewhere in that $18 range. City raised the price target from 40 to 43. You also had Jeff who raised their price target from 25 to

    6. 30. The stock is trading 16 and a half.

    7. Now, I would say this, if if this thing gets beat up a little bit too much more, John, this could be a pretty interesting thing to keep an eye on and maybe maybe decide to make a position, especially if we see some unusual option activity come back into this thing. Now, if that's a

    8. lot of ifs, so I I don't think you need to chase it. some of the people probably early on were chasing this thing, but the fact that City and Jeff and the rest of them have some some pretty lofty levels that they're talking about as far as the price target. Um, I would say to keep a very very close eye on this one

    9. and looking for any kind of tip about unusual options hitting of any kind. And hopefully if if we see that, that's something that I think our group, all of us are going to probably pounce pretty quickly because this thing is only up a dollar on the day. 6%. Well, this thing was running pretty dagone nice when it

    10. hit all the way up there over 19. So, we'll see how the rest of the day goes, but um I think there's still some opportunity there if they continue this selloff.

    11. >> Yep. And I think Jeff was smart to make the move today, Pete. And I think most of the people that follow Jeffre would probably um have been reacting on the way down as the stock popped under uh 18 and traded all the way back down to 16

    12. because you know a $2 billion investment in a convertible preferred um I I don't know that's not the same as an ATM an at the money um financing for instance. bas they basically are saying we're putting 2 billion in and we're going to have a

    13. convertible preferred at 1836.

    14. Okay, that's fine. Doesn't mean it's there right now. It means they could be exercising that thing. I don't know what the terms of it are, Pete, but they could be exercising that preferred exercise at a much later date. And who knows, maybe the stock's 2530 at that

    15. point or higher. Yeah, >> that's what Jeff said.
